August Afternoon

by Hilda Conkling

Sea-blue of gentian,
Blackberries ebony stain,
Yellow of goldenrod,
Tree fringes wavering along the road
Under the hill,
These make up an August afternoon
I have known:
But more than fruit or flower or tree
Is my mother's love I hold
In my heart.
