Repay each act of kindness,
Return each look of love,
And not to others' goodness
Ungrateful let us prove;
But like the little flower,
In thanks for what is done,
Give sweetness for the shower,
And beauty for the sun.
If we derive a pleasure
From that which we receive,
Let us the self-same measure
To others freely give;
Our joy will be the sweeter,
If we thus practise love,
The world will be the better,
And God our works approve.
