William Knox was a descendant of the reformer John Knox. His poem Mortality was introduced to Abraham Lincoln when Lincoln was a young man. The poem made a profound impression on Lincoln, who committed it to memory. Mortality would remain Lincoln's favorite poem for the rest of his life.
